Driveway Landscaping Ideas

driveway landscaping

Since driveways are the often the entrance to your home and property, driveway landscaping is an important part of front yard landscaping.  Decide what type of message you want to convey and how you use your driveway before choosing which of the front yard landscaping ideas you want to implement.

If you have young children that play on the driveway or a basketball hoop on your garage, you'll want to avoid planting flowers along the edges of your driveway.  Instead, consider using heartier trees or shrubs to outline your driveway.  Trees and evergreen shrubs have the added benefit of being attractive year-round.

The part of the driveway that often gets the most attention while landscaping is the entrance, and rightly so.  This is the part of the driveway that will be noticed the most.  Consider if gating your driveway is right for you.  Some find this feature expensive and inconvenient, while others praise it for adding privacy, security, and beauty to their front yard landscaping.

Even if you decide not to gate your driveway, you might benefit from building a wall.  This can prevent passers-by from walking on your well-kept lawn and add privacy to your front yard.  If these matters do not concern you, you might find that you only need to build a wall only at the driveway entrance, and not around your own home.  This will add height and depth to your front yard landscaping.  Be sure to use the entranceway to prominently display your street address to help emergency vehicles, friends, and delivery find your home easily.

Instead of a brick wall, you might decide to find a large boulder to display at the entrance of your driveway for added character.  Choose a shape and size that appeal to you and one that matches the rest of your front yard landscaping.

Another important area to pay attention to is any footpaths that you have that lead from the driveway to your door.  Make the path with brick or stones and edge it on one side with flowers.

Take advantage of the natural shape of your driveway when landscaping your front yard.  If your driveway curves, use the land around the curve as a focal point of your lawn with a nice flower bed or a topiary.

Driveway landscaping needs to be both functional and attractive.  Finding the balance between the two can make your home stand out and be inviting.  Don't neglect the area around your driveway while landscaping your front yard.
