Concrete Landscaping Ideas
|
When you think beautiful landscaping, you
probably don't think concrete. But
with a lifespan of thirty years or more, concrete can be a useful and
inexpensive substance to use in your front yard landscaping.
Although many prefer the aesthetics of brick or stone walkways, in some
cases concrete is more suitable.
Since you will have a smooth surface, it's ideal for people who use wheelchairs
or have unsure footing.

A concrete patio is a great addition for
families. Young children can play on
the patio. Whether you wish to help
preserve the grass from being trampled or if you simply want your children to
have a flat surface to play their games on, a concrete patio will provide a
great area for your children and their friends.
Of course, a patio is not simply for children.
If you enjoy sitting outside and want a stable place for your outdoor
furniture, a concrete patio can be a great idea, especially if you do not have a
large front porch. While many patios
are more suited to the backyard, if your lawn is large enough you might consider
placing one out front.
Although concrete has a long life, it will need
repair over the years to maintain a smooth and uncracked finish.
When you first install concrete, you can take some steps to minimize the
need for repairs later on. The main
enemy of outdoor concrete is water.
The best way to prevent water from penetrating concrete's surface is at the
batch plant. Use entrained air
admixture. For additional
protection, use epoxy based sealers afterwards.
Even with these precautions in place, you might
still need to repair your concrete down the road.
The best way to repair your concrete features is to remove any heaved or
cracked sections. Replace the
damaged sections with new ones. When
you are replacing concrete, first ensure that the sub-base is sufficiently
compacted. If you are doing your
repair project during the hot summer, you'll need to first wet the sub-base and
then occasionally mist it while it cures.
Concrete takes about a month to get to its full strength.
If you are working on a driveway, make sure you
are taking necessary precautions so that the driveway can hold the weight of the
vehicles. Reinforcement will be
necessary. Wire mesh is a common
type of reinforcement used on driveways.
When using concrete in your landscaping, you want
it to be useful but not noticeable.
Although it lacks the beauty of stone and brick, it makes up for it in
convenience. Used in small
quantities and balanced with nature such as trees, shrubs, and flowers, it will
not detract from the appeal of your front yard.
